NEWSLETTER OF EAA CHAPTER 268, MARIETTA GEORGIA

MAR 2003                                                                                                  JOIN EAA

THE PREZ SEZ:

First, I'd like to thank Kerry Bedsworth for his efforts over the years, and wish him well in his new (aviation related) job in South Carolina.  A very active member of the chapter, Kerry has been the Chapter President, the chief cook and bottle washer with the Chuck Wagon, and, most recently, the Young Eagles coordinator.  Unfortunately for the Chapter, be is giving up his Young Eagles role because of his relocation.

With a Young Eagles event scheduled for May 24, we need a coordinator to step forward quickly so we don't drop the ball on this important function.

We had great participation at the Chapter's last two activities.  We had around 15 members who joined in on the service day in April. That Saturday, the Chuck Wagon was spiffed up considerably, the "Adopt a Mile" area near McCollum was returned to pristine condition, and several folding tables were repaired.  Later in the week, Jim Wauford gave the Chuck Wagon a much-needed coat of paint...

A week later, Jim towed the Chuck Wagon to Lawrenceville for Wings weekend, where by 8 or so other volunteers joined him and cooked, cleaned, served, and otherwise ran an outstanding fast food establishment for a few hours.  I don't have the exact figures, but we sold enough burgers and hot dogs to earn the chapter a profit of over $600.

Many thanks to everyone who participated!

Is anyone interested in a fly-out to Fort Payne on May 31st? They are having a fly-in breakfast followed by Young Eagle flights.  It isn't that far away, and I've never been there, so what the heck...

Something that is still in the pre-planning stage (i.e. unplanned) is the seminar we've scheduled for June 28th.  Let's talk about that in the next meeting, and figure out what skills everyone is interested in and who would be willing to share their expertise.  Also, it would be nice to do an aviation related yard sale of sorts during the seminar.  I've got more than a few items that I really don't need anymore, and if I could sell 'em for a few dollars, I could buy an extra gallon or two of gas for the RV...

As always, I hope to see everyone at our next meeting, which is 7:00 on May 15, at Hansen Aero on McCollum Field.

Talewinds,

Kyle

RAMBLINGS

Unfortunately I missed last month’s meeting as I was on my way to Wisconsin.  My wife and I had decided to purchase some acreage for a summer retreat and I even managed to get a little extra to cut in a runway (well OK, its corn this year, maybe it will be next year).  I was destined for Waupaca (about 35 miles NW of Oshkosh) and had to make the obligatory stop at the Mecca of Sport Aviation.  As I a pulled off Hwy 41 and stopped for the red light there was Aluminum Overcast sitting at the hold short for Rwy 9…immediately I knew I was back.  I tried to wait-out the run-up but the truck behind me was oblivious to the grand sight that was about to unfold us on the runway ahead and had to drive on.  As I drove towards the buildings it was apparent that spring was just starting to arrive.  Pioneer Airport was unfortunately still closed and all that green grass around the facilities looked rather barren without the thousands of planes and people.  There were only a couple of cars in the visitors’ parking lot and I had the museum almost to myself, albeit it was a quick walk through.  A pass through the Aeronautica Store and I was back on the road.

The weather was spectacularly clear and on Saturday I treated to variety of aviation activity (ultralights, amphibs, a formation of vintage Pipers & Aeroncas, and the turbo prop commuters headed into Appleton).

On Monday, Don Stewart (designer of the Headwind & Foo Fighter) flew down from Michigan and we spent the morning visiting.  Don and I have talking on the phone and via computer for about 8 months; he is a retired airline captain, a very good designer, and a cool guy too!  Don has a new two place SBS low-wing about ready to fly using a Walter Mikron 65 hp which he has dubbed the 265.  Additionally, he is designed an eloquently simple bush plane freighter that is also nearing completion.  Shamelessly placed marketing ad…visit Don’s website at http://www.stewartaircraft.com/

With some hard work and a good tractor there will be a new grass strip on the Green Bay sectional in the not too distance future.  Look for Deer Run Aerodrome, GPS coordinates forthcoming.
